Your Duramax is built to tow, plow, and pull through Maine winters — but only if it’s maintained like the diesel it is. Duramax Maintenance, Done Right

A diesel isn’t a gas engine with a bigger fuel tank. It has its own oil, its own filters, its own emissions fluid, and on HD trucks, its own transmission service. Skip or shortcut any of it and you put the most expensive parts of your truck at risk. Here’s what we keep on top of for your Duramax:

Diesel oil & filterThe correct diesel-spec engine oil and filter, on the schedule your GM Oil Life System calls for — sooner if you tow heavy, idle a lot, or run near GVWR.
Fuel filter(s)Diesel injection systems are precision parts — clean fuel is everything. We replace the fuel filter(s) when your maintenance indicator calls for it and drain the water separator.
DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)Your emissions system runs on DEF, and it gets used up. We top it off with the correct fluid so your truck never derates or limits power on you.
Air filterA diesel breathes hard, especially towing and plowing. A clean engine air filter protects power, fuel economy, and the turbo.
Allison transmission serviceHD Duramax trucks pair with an Allison transmission that has its own fluid and filter service — and towing/plowing puts it on the severe-duty schedule.
Full diesel inspection + UVEYEWe scan your truck with UVEYE and look over the turbo, cooling, charge-air, and after-treatment systems — the things a general garage often skips.

Exact service intervals depend on your engine, model year, and how you drive. Always follow the GM Oil Life System and your truck’s maintenance indicators, or ask us — we’ll set the right schedule for how you use your truck.

DEF, Explained — And Why It Matters

DEF stands for Diesel Exhaust Fluid — a clean blend of urea and deionized water that your Duramax sprays into the exhaust to turn harmful emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. It’s what lets a modern diesel run clean. The catch: DEF gets consumed as you drive, and when it runs low your truck will warn you — then start limiting power until it’s refilled. We keep your DEF topped up with the correct fluid every time you’re in, so you’re never stuck with a derated truck in the middle of a tow or a plow run.

Why a Dealer for Your Diesel

Plenty of shops will change your oil. Far fewer are trained, tooled, and licensed to service a modern Duramax the right way. Here’s the difference between Weirs and the general garage down the road:

Diesel-Trained Techs

Our technicians are GM-certified and diesel-trained — they know the Duramax, the after-treatment system, and the Allison, not just “a truck.”

GM Tools & Software

Diesel diagnostics, calibrations, and emissions work need GM software and the right tools. We have them; most general shops don’t.

Protects Your Warranty

Service done to GM spec with the correct parts and fluids keeps your powertrain and emissions warranty coverage intact — and keeps records clean.

Both Duramax Engines, Serviced Here

GMC builds two current Duramax engines, and we service both — from the light-duty Sierra 1500 diesel to the heavy hitters that tow and plow.

EngineWhat it powers & how we service it
3.0L Duramax I-6 (LZ0)The light-duty turbo-diesel inline-six in the Sierra 1500, paired with a 10-speed automatic. Diesel oil service, fuel filter, DEF, and air filter, all to GM spec.
6.6L Duramax V-8 (L5P)The heavy-duty turbo-diesel V-8 in the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD, paired with an Allison transmission. Everything above, plus Allison fluid and filter service — on the severe-duty schedule if you tow or plow.

Maine Is Exactly When Diesel Maintenance Matters

You didn’t buy a Duramax to drive it easy. Up here it’s towing a trailer to the lake, hauling a loaded bed, and plowing driveways at 5 a.m. in single digits — the exact conditions that put the most stress on a diesel. Cold-weather starts ask the most of your oil, your fuel, and your batteries. Towing and plowing push your engine and your Allison into severe-duty territory faster than the average commuter ever sees. That’s precisely why correct, on-time diesel maintenance isn’t optional in Maine — it’s what keeps your truck working when the weather turns. We serve diesel owners across Southern Maine: Biddeford, Saco, Kennebunk, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, and Portland — with the NH Seacoast under an hour away.

Duramax Questions, Answered

How often should I service my Duramax?

Follow your GM Oil Life System and your truck’s maintenance indicators rather than a single fixed number — they adjust to how you actually drive. If you tow heavy, plow, idle a lot, or run near your truck’s maximum weight, you’ll hit service intervals sooner and should plan on severe-duty maintenance. Not sure where you stand? Bring it in and we’ll set the right schedule for how you use your truck.

What is DEF and how often does it need filling?

DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is a urea-and-water solution your Duramax injects into the exhaust to clean up emissions — it’s required for the engine to run properly. It gets used up as you drive, and your truck will warn you when it’s low and eventually limit power until it’s refilled. How fast you go through it depends on mileage and how hard you work the truck. We top it off with the correct DEF at every visit so you’re never caught short.

When should the fuel filter be replaced?

Clean fuel is critical on a diesel, so the fuel filter is a maintenance item, not a “wait until it fails” part. Replace it when your truck’s maintenance indicator calls for it — we’ll also drain the water separator at the same time. We can confirm the exact interval for your engine and model year and put it on a schedule for you.

Do you service the Allison transmission?

Yes. HD Duramax trucks (Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD) pair the 6.6L L5P with an Allison transmission that has its own fluid and filter service. If you tow or plow, that pushes the Allison onto a severe-duty schedule, which means more frequent service to protect it. Our diesel-trained techs handle Allison service to GM spec.

Will dealer service keep my diesel warranty intact?

Yes. Servicing your Duramax at Weirs to GM specifications, with the correct GM parts and fluids, keeps your powertrain and emissions warranty coverage intact and your service records clean. That documentation matters if you ever need a warranty repair on an expensive diesel component.

Do you service both the 3.0L and 6.6L Duramax?

We do. We service the 3.0L Duramax inline-six (LZ0) in the Sierra 1500 and the 6.6L Duramax V-8 (L5P) in the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD — including the Allison transmission on the HD trucks. Whatever Duramax you run, our diesel-trained techs have the training, tools, and software for it.

Do I have to own my truck from Weirs to get it serviced here?

No. We service Duramax diesels for owners across Southern Maine no matter where you bought the truck — Biddeford, Saco, Kennebunk, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, Portland, and the NH Seacoast.
