What a Maine Inspection Checks

A Maine state safety inspection is a head-to-toe look at the systems that keep you and everyone around you safe. Our licensed inspectors go through each of these — here’s what we’re looking at when your vehicle is on the lift:

Brakes

Pads, rotors, lines, and hardware — the system that has to stop you every time.

Suspension & Steering

Shocks, struts, and steering components for safe handling and control.

Tires & Wheels

Tread depth, damage, and wheel condition — your only contact with the road.

Lights & Signals

Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and markers so you’re seen.

Windshield & Wipers

Glass condition and wipers for clear visibility in Maine weather.

Exhaust System

Checked for leaks and damage that could let fumes into the cabin.

Seat Belts & Airbags

Restraint systems verified to protect you in a crash.

Why Maine Still Requires It

Maine requires an annual motor-vehicle safety inspection — a fresh sticker every year. And as of 2026, Maine is one of the last states in the country that still mandates it; even next-door New Hampshire ended its annual inspection program this year. Up here, where road salt, frost heaves, and hard winters work on every vehicle, that yearly safety check still does real work: it catches worn brakes, bald tires, and bad wipers before they become a problem on the highway. Your sticker is good for one year and lives in the lower-left corner of your windshield — when it’s due, we make it quick.

We Service What We Find

Here’s where Weirs is different from a quick sticker shop. If something fails or comes up borderline during your inspection — brakes getting thin, a tire under the line, a worn wiper, a light out — we show you exactly what it is, no scare tactics. And because the same Express Shop that runs your inspection also does brakes, tires, and fluids, we can usually fix it right then, the same day, so you leave with a sticker instead of a to-do list. One stop, one trip, legal and done.

Common same-day fixes we can knock out during an inspection:

BrakesThin pads or worn rotors? Our brake service runs through the same Express Shop.
TiresTread under the limit or a damaged tire can fail you — ask about our tire deals.
Wipers & LightsA worn wiper blade or a burned-out bulb is a fast fix while you’re here.
While you’re hereDue for an oil change or rotation? We can do it in the same visit.

All Makes & Models Welcome

You don’t need to drive a GMC to get your sticker here. Maine inspections are done at licensed dealerships, service stations, and garages — and Weirs is licensed to inspect them all. Ford, Toyota, Honda, Chevy, Jeep, Subaru, whatever’s in your driveway — bring it in. GM-certified techs, a multi-point inspection, and a UVEYE vehicle scan come standard, no matter the badge on the hood.

Fast, Because of the Express Shop

Your inspection runs through our dedicated Express Shop — back-right of the campus, next to the body shop — the same team that handles oil, tires, brakes, and fluids. They book three appointments every 40 minutes, so same-day is usually possible and you’re not stuck waiting all afternoon. GM-certified techs do the work, every vehicle gets a UVEYE scan and a multi-point inspection, and if we find something that needs attention to pass, we can often take care of it on the spot.

Portland & Cumberland County Drivers

One thing to know if you’re registered in Cumberland County — the greater Portland area: in addition to the safety inspection, your vehicle also requires an emissions test. If that’s you, mention it when you book so we make sure you’re covered. Registered in York County (Biddeford, Saco, Kennebunk, and most of our neighbors)? Then it’s the standard safety inspection — no emissions test required.

Right on Route 1

You’ll find us at 1513 Portland Rd, right on Route 1 in Arundel/Biddeford — an easy run for drivers in Saco, Kennebunk, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, and the greater Portland area. When your sticker’s coming due, swing by the dealership that’s been taking care of Southern Maine for more than 65 years. Quick inspection, honest answers, and if we find something, we can usually fix it the same day.

Maine Inspection Questions, Answered

How often do I need a Maine inspection?

Maine requires an annual motor-vehicle safety inspection — a new sticker every year. Your current sticker is valid for one year from when it was issued and goes in the lower-left corner of your windshield. As of 2026, Maine is one of the last states that still requires an annual inspection.

What gets checked in a Maine inspection?

A Maine inspection covers your brakes; suspension and steering (shocks and struts); tires and wheels (tread depth and damage); lights and signals; windshield and wipers; the exhaust system; and seat belts and airbags. Our licensed inspectors go through each one before issuing a sticker.

What happens if my car fails inspection?

We’ll show you exactly what failed or came up borderline — no scare tactics. Because your inspection runs through our Express Shop, which also does brakes, tires, and fluids, we can often repair it the same day so you leave with a sticker instead of a return trip.

Do you inspect all makes and models?

Yes. You don’t need a GMC to get your sticker here. Maine inspections are performed at licensed dealerships, service stations, and garages, and Weirs is licensed to inspect all makes and models — whatever you drive.

Do I need an appointment?

An appointment is the best way to get in and out fast. Your inspection runs through the Express Shop, which schedules three appointments every 40 minutes, so booking ahead means same-day is usually possible. You can schedule online or give us a call.

Does Portland / Cumberland County need an emissions test too?

Yes. Vehicles registered in Cumberland County (the greater Portland area) also require an emissions test in addition to the safety inspection. If you’re registered in York County, only the standard safety inspection is required. Let us know where you’re registered when you book.

How long does a Maine inspection take?

Most inspections are quick, and same-day is usually possible through our Express Shop. The biggest variable is whether we find something that needs to be repaired to pass — and since we do brakes, tires, and more in-house, we can often handle that the same day too.
