The Short Answer

One Engine, Four Personalities

At Weirs GMC in Arundel — right between Biddeford, Kennebunk, and Portland — the question we hear most about the Canyon isn’t “which engine?” It’s “which trim?” That’s because every 2026 GMC Canyon runs the same 2.7L TurboMax turbo-four: 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. You don’t pick a powertrain — you pick a personality.

The four trims — Elevation, AT4, AT4X, and Denali — climb from value daily driver to lifted-and-locked trail rig to leather-lined luxury. Below we break down what each one actually gives you, what it costs, and who we steer toward it. If you’re still deciding between the Canyon and a full-size truck, start with our 2026 GMC Canyon overview or the broader Find My GMC Truck guide.

Canyon Elevation — The Smart Entry Point

2026 GMC Canyon Elevation in Southern Maine
Value

Elevation

Starting ~$38,900 (RWD) · ~$42,200 (4WD)

The Elevation is the Canyon most Maine commuters actually need. It comes well-equipped out of the box, and you can add 4WD for around $3,300 — which most of our buyers do once they think about January on Route 1.

  • Rear-wheel drive standard; 4WD available (+~$3,300)
  • 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • 11-inch digital driver display
  • Rear camera and parking sensors
  • Forward collision alert and lane departure warning
  • 8.6 inches of ground clearance

Who we point to the Elevation: buyers commuting I-95 or running around Portland and Kennebunk who want a right-sized truck without a big payment. Add 4WD and it handles our winters just fine.

Trim 2 of 4

Canyon AT4 — The Maine Sweet Spot

Everyday Off-Road

AT4

Starting ~$45,500

The AT4 is the trim we sell the most of, and for good reason: it’s the everyday off-road Canyon. A factory 2-inch lift, standard 4WD, a locking rear diff, and real drive modes make camp roads, boat ramps, and snowy back roads a non-event.

  • 4WD standard
  • Factory 2-inch lift (~10.6 in clearance)
  • Electronic locking rear differential
  • Terrain, Off-Road, Tow/Haul, and Normal drive modes
  • Underbody skid plates & all-terrain tires
  • Off-road-tuned suspension

Who we point to the AT4: the trailhead-and-camp crowd — folks who tow a small boat or a couple of sleds, drive dirt to the lake, and still want a comfortable daily. For most Southern Maine buyers, this is the one. It also keeps the full 7,700-lb tow rating.

Trim 3 of 4

Canyon AT4X — Lifted, Locked, Loaded

2026 GMC Canyon AT4X on a rugged Maine trail
Hardcore Trail

AT4X

Starting ~$57,300

The AT4X is the most capable Canyon GMC builds. It takes the AT4 and goes further — a taller lift, lockers at both ends, and trick dampers that make rough trails feel composed. If you actually use the backcountry, this is the one.

  • Everything on the AT4, plus:
  • Factory 3-inch lift (~11.6 in clearance)
  • Electronic locking front and rear differentials
  • Multimatic DSSV dampers
  • Exclusive Baja high-speed off-road drive mode
  • Up to 10-camera system with underbody views
  • Head-up display & Bose premium audio

Who we point to the AT4X: serious off-roaders who put the truck to work on technical terrain. One trade-off to know: the AT4X is rated to tow up to 6,000 lbs rather than 7,700, so if heavy towing is your priority, the AT4 is the smarter pick.

Trim 4 of 4

Canyon Denali — The Premium Midsize

Luxury

Denali

Starting ~$53,300

The Denali is the Canyon for people who want a premium truck without going full-size. It trades the off-road lift for comfort and presence — perforated leather, a head-up display, Bose audio, and exclusive 20-inch wheels — while keeping standard 4WD for our weather.

  • 4WD standard
  • Perforated leather seating surfaces
  • Head-up display (HUD)
  • Bose premium audio system
  • Exclusive 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires
  • Premium interior trim & wireless charging pad

Who we point to the Denali: buyers who spend most of their miles on pavement — the coast, downtown Portland, the highway — and want the nicest cabin in the lineup. It still has 4WD and the full 7,700-lb tow rating; it just prioritizes comfort over clearance.

FAQ

Canyon Trim Questions

Which 2026 Canyon trim is most popular?
The AT4. It balances real off-road capability — a 2-inch lift, locking rear differential, and off-road drive modes — with standard 4WD and a reasonable price around $45,500. For most Southern Maine buyers, it’s the sweet spot.
Do all Canyon trims have the same engine?
Yes. Every 2026 GMC Canyon uses the 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged four-cylinder making 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, with an 8-speed automatic. There’s no engine to choose between — you pick the trim.
Can I get 4WD on the Canyon Elevation?
Yes. The Elevation comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but 4WD is available for about $3,300. In Maine, most of our Elevation buyers add it.
What’s the difference between the AT4 and AT4X?
The AT4 has a 2-inch lift, 4WD, a locking rear differential, and skid plates (~10.6 in of clearance). The AT4X adds a 3-inch lift, locking front and rear differentials, Multimatic DSSV dampers, Baja mode, and roughly 11.6 in of clearance — built for serious trail use.
Which Canyon trim is best for towing?
The Elevation, AT4, and Denali are all rated to tow up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped. The off-road AT4X is rated up to 6,000 lbs. If towing is your top priority, the AT4 or Denali make the most sense.
Is the Denali worth it over the AT4?
It depends on how you drive. The Denali adds perforated leather, a head-up display, Bose audio, and 20-inch wheels for a more premium daily experience, but it doesn’t have the AT4’s lift or lockers. If you spend most of your time on pavement, the Denali is excellent; if you head off-road, the AT4 or AT4X serve you better.
Where can I compare Canyon trims near Portland, Maine?
